Installing Waterline Designs Boat Screens This is good for the off-watch sleeping during the day on passage (you might not want the hatches open underway but you can use these without opening hatches) or just to avoid early sunrises and late sunsets as when cruising high latitudes in summer (the company is based in Sweden).

  • They also have screens with a blackout shield.
  • I’ll take less breeze in order to block the no-see-ums! The downside (which is true of any screen that keeps no-see-ums out) is that less breeze passes through.
  • The screen is fine enough to keep no-see-ums out, which is a big plus.
  • They are “universal fit” boat window screens in several size ranges, which makes them far less expensive than custom screens or replacement ones from the manufacturer.
  • You also don’t have to sorry about a bent frame letting bugs in. Consequently, they are very compact to store – much smaller than our “original” ones with aluminum frames.
  • The best way to describe them is that they are like the “instant pop up” tents that you may have seen: they have a frame made of a very springy material that just pops into shape a twist of the wrist folds them back up.
  • Details of Waterline Designs Boat Window Screens We used them anchored off mangroves in the Florida Keys – notorious for both mosquitoes and no-see-ums unless the wind is blowing – as well as in a few “no wind” anchorages in the Bahamas. Would we be interested in trying their after-market screens? I looked at them online and, as they seemed to solve several of the problems we had, said yes, we’d be interested in trying them and providing feedback. Just as we were leaving for the Bahamas, Waterline Designs contacted me. But if there are mosquitoes or – worse – no-see-ums, we want screens! If there are no bugs, we prefer the extra ventilation of not having a screen in. To be honest, most of the time we don’t use screeens. I looked at buying some from the port manufacturers, but the cost just seemed too high.
  • We have four smaller ports that help considerably with cross ventilation, but those had no screens.

More than once, we totally closed the boat to keep the bugs out. a real problem at Glades Boat Yard and in the Florida Keys on nights with no wind. Being regular screen, no-see-ums could still get in.instead, we used 2” wide tape to seal the gap. I checked the price for a replacement (gulp!). We tried to straighten it out but couldn’t get it perfect. One of the hatch frames was just slightly bent and would let mosquitoes in.

Again we always prefer the fresh air but it's good to have a plan for those times when you need to shield the sun and or run the air unit and be more efficient.Overwhelmed with all there is to learn as you're starting to cruise? Help is here: Overcoming the First-Year Learning Curve (a free mini-course from The Boat Galley). This would also apply in the Keys during the hot part of the day, especially if you were on the lee side of the wind at dock. With the sun shades it helps reflect the suns rays so the air unit does not work as hard. The PNW seems to be ideal for not being concerned about shielding the sun but, as an example, the Chesapeake Bay in July and August is almost unbearable from the hot temperature and high humidity and a place we've run our air conditioner to stay cool while at dock. However with that said it is not always possible when we're on the hook or at a marina because of high humidity and no wind, it's just to uncomfortable.

First off we'd prefer the fresh air with the windows and door open and not running the air conditioning and we never run the air while cruising. I can not speak for everyone but for us, we live in Michigan and have boated on the east coast, Florida, the west coast and in between and the shades come in handy.
